IT Job Descriptions

Trying to keep track of all the industry-specific job titles and roles in IT jobs today can be challenging. We list some useful IT job descriptions to help you understand what they involve and what their responsibilities are.

Software engineers, developers and programmers don’t always work exclusively for tech companies. Developers can work in nearly every area of industry. A lot of new roles have emerged, and many old ones have disappeared. Some jobs are amalgamated which indicate the flexible nature of the tech industry.

Applications Systems Analyst

Responsible for planning, designing and implementing information systems. Required to perform coding, testing, debugging and installation activities. Works with organisational end-users making clear present operating procedures and communicating program objectives. May report to a project leader, manager or department head. Sometimes manages others.


  • Identify all system requirements
  • Examine/evaluate current systems
  • Meet with users to log and identify additional requirements and features
  • Analyse and log interfaces between new and old/existing systems
  • Collaborate with IT team/developers producing new systems
  • Train users on the new OS and provide support
  • Validate all changes by testing
  • Ensure budget and deadlines can be and are met
  • Staying up-to-date with current technology and new technical developments

Business Analyst

Evaluating business systems and how they align with user needs. Analyzes data using a variety of techniques. Plans, executes and monitors business solutions. Documents requirements, establishes scope and objectives and determines strategy for implementing systems that achieve business goals. Relies on established guidelines and instructions to perform daily job functions. Works under immediate supervision and usually reports to a supervisor.


  • Define and configure business analysis requirements
  • Develop relationships with stakeholders to optimize/enhance integration
  • Communication of insights and findings
  • Report sources of tech issues and make recommendations to product teams
  • Perform QA
  • Reporting and alerting
  • Design, document and maintain system processes
  • Identify ways to improve monitoring, analyse issues and deliver better value to the end-user
